Artie Pepelea begins his seventh season on the coaching staff and third as the top assistant to Dan Dakich.

Pepelea oversees the team's recruiting efforts and assists in scheduling He also is responsible for scouting reports and game preparation. Pepelea has been a part of two MAC Championship teams, in 2000 at BGSU and in 1998 at Ball State. In addition, he has helped squads to three NIT appearances and worked with MAC Players of the Year Keith McLeod (2002) and Anthony Stacey (2000) of BGSU and Bonzi Wells (1996 and 1998) at Ball State. Wells now plays for the Memphis Grizzlies and McLeod enters this season as a member of the Utah Jazz..

He has served in all three assistant positions at BGSU and has overseen camps and the Junior Falcons program during his stay.

The Anderson, Ind., native came to the Falcon program very familiar with the Mid-American Conference after spending the previous three seasons at Ball State where he was the administrative assistant for one season (1995-96) and assistant coach his final two years. He helped the Cardinals to a 21-8 record in 1997-98 and a berth in the NIT after tying Western Michigan for the West Division MAC title. He began his coaching career as an administrative assistant at Middle Tennessee in 1994-95.

Pepelea earned his undergraduate degree from Wisconsin-Parkside in 1994 in political science. He earned four letters as a member of the Parkside basketball team, starting for two seasons, leading the squad in assists. He earned second-team all-state honors during his senior year in high school in Anderson, Ind.

Pepelea and his wife, Melissa, have been married for nine years and have a daughter, Morgan, who was born on August 18, 2000.
